Flow rate of the Saine at Foncine-le-Bas

Before setting off on the Gorges de Malvaux canyon hike, it is essential to check the water level of the River Saine.

The water level has a direct impact on:

  • safety during the descent,
  • the feasibility of certain sections,
  • the more or less recreational nature of the canyon.

What is the ideal flow rate for canyoning in the Gorges de Malvaux?

The Malvaux Canyon can be explored at various water levels, but conditions vary considerably.

  • Low flow: a more accessible route, with less water, suitable for children;
  • Average pace: ideal conditions, a fun and smooth route, perfect for groups of adults;
  • High difficulty: greater commitment, more technical sections; for the fittest riders only.

Please note: even at low flow rates, some obstacles may pose risks that are sometimes difficult to spot.

Why is it important to take water flow into account when canyoning?

A river’s flow rate determines the level of difficulty and the associated risks.

In the Gorges de Malvaux, a flow rate that is too high may:

  • increase the strength of the currents;
  • to render certain sections impassable;
  • make it more difficult to empty the basins.

Conversely, a flow rate that is too low may reduce the fun factor of the course.

Is it possible to go canyoning in Malvaux without knowing the river?

The Malvaux Canyon remains accessible, but it requires a good understanding of the terrain and conditions.

Without any knowledge of the site:

  • Some aquatic traps can be difficult to spot;
  • Changes in flow rate may be misinterpreted.

The flow rate measured at the sensor is only an indication: it must always be analysed in the context of the actual conditions on site.

Passionate about mountain activities since I was a child, it all began with climbing at the age of 7. I moved to the Jura out of love, the environment immediately won me over. So I settled here and set up Rock’n Jump Adventure to share my experience in what I do best: climbing, teaching and handling ropes.
